WetlandUpdate February 2015

The Great Barrier Reef—Our wetlands video—Why are they important?

The Great Barrier Reef—Our Wetlands—Why are they important?, introduced by Andrew Powell, Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection, highlights the many values of wetlands in the North Queensland Dry Tropics region with a focus on the Townsville City Council area and the Burdekin Shire. The video raises awareness of the roles, values, diversity, functions and beauty of wetlands in the wider landscape. The video will be of particular interest to Natural Resource Management Groups (NRM), extension officers, farming communities and general public in Great Barrier Reef catchments.

Currawinya Lakes Ramsar site information

The Currawinya Lakes Ramsar Site/Currawinya National Park - Ramsar Management Summary 2014 is now available and provides information and guidance for land managers responsible for the management of Ramsar sites.

To find out more about the Summary and other Currawinya Lakes and other Ramsar sites visit the Nationally (DIWA) and internationally important (Ramsar) wetlands page.

World Wetlands Day 2015

The international theme for World Wetlands Day 2015 is Wetlands for Our Future.

Wetlands offer substantial economic, social and environmental values which, if managed sustainably, will provide benefits to future generations. Raising awareness and understanding of wetland values and services is essential for ensuring their wise use and conservation.

The Ramsar Convention Secretariat has developed a number of downloadable World Wetlands Day materials for 2015, including a teaching guide, handouts, posters and fact sheets. These materials can be found on the Ramsar Convention Secretariat’s World Wetlands Day 2015 website. Groups and individuals are encouraged to adapt these materials for their own World Wetlands Day events and activities.

To celebrate World Wetlands Day, the Ramsar Convention Secretariat is also running a photographic competition for 15-24 year olds. The winner will receive a free flight to a famous wetland of their choice anywhere in the world. To enter, take a picture of your favourite wetland with your phone or digital camera between 2 February and 2 March 2015, and upload it to the Ramsar Convention Secretariat’s World Wetlands Day 2015 website.

How to find events

The Australian Government produces a web-based Calendar of Events for World Wetlands Day each year. If you have a World Wetlands Day activity that you would like advertised before 2 February 2015, please contact wetlandsmail♲environment.gov.au.
