Actions you can take

Below are practical actions that land managers can take to manage waste pollution. These actions can help reduce the amount of waste pollution and its impacts. They can assist all sectors and communities transition to more sustainable production, consumption and disposal.

The information on this page are representative of the key technologies available and sit within the context of the waste hierarchy. However, they are not exhaustive and new technologies are constantly improving and a thorough review of other sources should also be undertaken before choosing a technology.

Quick facts

Over 90%
of plastics and metals in mobile phones and batteries can be reused in new products.
Caution
should be taken with biological plastics as they often require commercial composting with high temperatures and the right humidity—in landfill, some can take as long as conventional plastics to break down.
Stormwater drain
pollutant traps can be fitted with filters fine enough to prevent even microplastics from moving through the environment.

These actions respond to the latest science on waste pollution sources, pathways, sinks and impacts. The actions cover a wide range of environments and land uses, including residential, commercial, industrial and rural.
