SummaryThis project involves pest species control/management within the Tuan State Forest along Kauri and Mosquito Creeks. It includes trapping for fox (Vulpes vulpes) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa) with the goal of protecting or enhancing vulnerable habitats and EVR species.
Weed control will be carried out, targeting three main species: introduced Sporobolus spp., lantana (Lantana camara) and groundsel bush (Baccharis halimifolia). The pest control will be carried out by QPWS staff and/or suitably qualified contractors under the management of QPWS staff. Several EVR species have been found in this area, including water mouse and dugong, and the project area also contains shorebird habitat. The feral pig, fox and weed control work will reduce the incidence of site damage and species predation, and allow native species to regenerate in damaged areas. The objective is to reduce threats and contribute to Protecting the Conservation Estate (PCE) - CFOC funding target. The reduction in feral pig and fox numbers will reduce the impact of predation and habitat destruction on the water mouse and ground parrot in addition to numerous other threatened species and communities, as well as breeding and roosting sites of shorebirds. The estuarine regions of Kauri and Mosquito creeks have been mapped as dugong habitat. BenefitsThe project will control weed species including Lantana (Lantana camara), rat’s tail (Sporobolus spp.), pine wildlings, as well as siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum), umbrella tree (Schefflera actinophylla), candle bush (Senna alata) and groundsel bush (Baccharis halimifolia).
