Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef Catchments Management Strategy 2016–21 (superseded)

The Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef Catchments Management Strategy 2016–2021 was developed to support the Reef 2050 Long–Term Sustainability Plan (Reef 2050 Plan) and the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan 2017–2022.

It has been replaced by the Reef 2050 Wetlands Strategy: a Strategy to manage wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef and its catchments.

Quick facts

The Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef Catchments Management Strategy 2016-2021
was implemented over five years across dozens of projects by natural resource management groups, local governments, community groups, conservation and environment organisations, universities, scientists, industry, landholders and Traditional Owners.

Evaluation of the Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Management Strategy 2016-21. Over the five-year implementation of the Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Management Strategy 2016-21, knowledge of wetland importance and management increased. An evaluation of the Strategy, informed by its users and other stakeholder groups, showed that over 60 organisations delivered relevant wetland activities and used the Strategy to inform the development of their own strategies and work programs, including Natural Resource Management plans. The evaluation of the Strategy also confirmed it was an effective and useable document with a clear structure and appropriate themes, goals, objectives and activities, and supported the development of an updated Strategy. In response to findings of the evaluation and the commitments outlined in the Reef 2050 Plan, the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation developed the Reef 2050 Wetlands Strategy.

The Wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef Catchments Management Strategy 2016–2021 supported the Reef 2050 Long term Sustainability Plan and the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan in setting out a framework for the improved management of the wetlands of the Great Barrier Reef catchments. It built on the achievements of the Queensland Wetlands Program and recognises wetlands as vital to the health of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem and its catchments.

The Strategy has been superseded by the updated Reef 2050 Wetlands Strategy. This Strategy was developed collaboratively with stakeholders involved in activities related to wetlands in the Great Barrier Reef catchments and informed by recommendations from the evaluation.
